Sevastopol (Sevastopil in Ukrainian) is a city of 378.000, located in the southernmost part of Ukraine at the edge of the Crimean peninsula. It was founded in 1783 as a Russian naval base. It turned into the main battlefield of the Crimean war between Russia and the coalition of Great Britain, France, Turkey and Sardinia, in 1854-1855. Another siege of Sevastopol took place in 1941-1942, that time by German troops during World War Two.
The military past of Sevastopol is reflected in numerous monuments and sights like the Panorama, Diorama, Konstantinovskiy and Mikhaylovskiy ravelins (fortresses), Sapun gora and Malakhov Kurgan. The city is still the main base for Russian Black Sea fleet as well as for the Ukrainian Naval forces.
